Gilhooley's Grande Saloon - Beverly/Mt. Greenwood
3901 W. 103rd St. Chicago, IL 60655
The dark-wood-and-polished-brass interior lends a European pub ambience to this somewhat upscale restaurant and bar. But in fact, this eclectic spot is almost as much of a gallery of art and artifacts as it is a restaurant. Dozens of stylized posters, by such artists as Toulouse-Lautrec, Cheret and Blanche Ostertag, grace the walls. Chandeliers and shiny lanterns hang from the ceiling, offsetting the cut glass and stained glass built into the beautiful wood bar. (Note the stunning carved fret work.) Two working fireplaces add a welcoming touch. What's almost as beautiful as all this is the fact that Gilhooley's prices do not match its expensive atmosphere. Its smallish menu stays fairly simple, with tasty appetizers, hot sandwiches, burgers and a few dinner selections, but everyone is likely to be satisfied--especially with the plenty-enough-to-fill-you-up portions. The double-sided bar-in-the-round features numerous taps with imported and domestic beers, and the house is stocked with a dizzying array of liquors. Though Gilhooley's is a popular meeting place/hangout for students who attend nearby St. Xavier University, its setting and food draw everyone from neighborhood retirees to young adults. A deejay spins pop, rock and dance tunes from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursdays; live bands play Fridays and Saturdays while locals entertain at an open mic on Wednesdays. Cable TV.

An elongated bar occupies the relaxed front room, while candlelit tables compliment the cushy back room bar. Leather settees and cube ottomans serve as seating in the swank upstairs lounge, where dark hardwood floors and trims highlight yet another fully-stocked bar. Adorned with swirls of blue hues and trellises, the rooftop Aqua Lounge inhabits several contemporary picnic tables and benches.
