Just 10 minutes from the Loop by taxi, Club Lucky is a noisy after-dark refuge for an eclectic crowd of stockbrokers, artists, writers and neighborhood regulars. Many who come here know one another and the conversation runs heavily toward Chicago politics and the latest films and theater. The dim lounge is a carefully contrived celebration of the 1950's: polished black Formica-top bar with its rows of stainless steel cocktail shakers and facing Naugahyde banquettes. The house specialty is the martini, and a separate menu offers six versions. A jukebox in the corner is well-stocked with 50's favorites, including lots of Frank Sinatra and big-band jazz. In the back, there is a 120-seat restaurant serving Italian-American fare, and food is also served at the bar.

Mike Miller has possibly created the most fun, eclectic bar in town. Five nights a week, a different DJ spins a different style of music. Typically, Monday is punk, Tuesday features a guest DJ, Wednesday is country/western, and Sunday is lounge. Sunday is especially memorable, as the lounge music is classic Sinatra and Sammy Davis recordings. As you dig on the sounds, you can choose from one of the city's largest selection of liquors, both fine and, for the less well off, not so fine. There are over 300 liquors to choose from, as well as over 75 beers. Upstairs, there is a smaller bar with games and a pool table.

June update: The folks behind Whiskey Bar & Grill have partnered up with chef Richard Sandoval (the man behind Pampano and Maya in NYC, Maya in San Francisco and Isla in Las Vegas) to launch a new concept in the Whiskey address. Both the bar and restaurant got a facelift in June; the decor now leans towards Latin (they still have the primo Rush Street sidewalk cafe). The restaurant, which is now dubbed Mexx Kitchen at The Whiskey, offers choices like wood-oven prepped enchiladas, ceviche and Mexico City-style tacos, plus entrees like beef tenderloin skewers with chorizo, bacon, red peppers, onions, cactus leaf and mushrooms with a tomatillo-chile morita sauce.
